October and November 2015 saw the launch of the Marine Corps’ new approach to maintaining crisis response forces forward-deployed at sea. Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Crisis Response – Africa (SPMAGTF-CR-AF) is testing the Allied Maritime Basing Initiative (AMBI) aboard allied ships, seeking to provide the US and its allies with a year-round maritime-based crisis response force in the Mediterranean Sea and Gulf of Guinea. This is accomplished by leveraging the significant amphibious capabilities already residing in Europe.
